Pre-Professional Dancer

Our Pre-Professional Program, for children aged 7 to 18, is designed to form a well-rounded dancer with a strong foundation in classical ballet and appreciation for other dance genres. This program is for students desiring more rigorous training and performance opportunities. All students in the Pre-Professional Program participate in studio demonstrations and our Performance Company. They are also expected to attend all classes at their level and follow the curriculum as planned, maintaining consistent progress. Initial placement will be determined by consultation with faculty and our School Director. Promotion to the next level will be based on age, ability, technical readiness and determined by the faculty. Students spend at least one year, often two years, at a particular level before moving on to the next level.

Parents will be able to consult with the School and Artistic Directors as the student progresses, especially if their child anticipates a professional career in dance or plans on attending a college dance program.

Students in the Pre-Professional program are recommended to take part in the YPBT performing company to complement and accelerate the dancer’s technical training. Through an audition, students study with professional teachers and choreographers and perform classical story ballets, contemporary works and repertory pieces in a theatrical venue. Company members rehearse on Saturdays throughout the school year and periodically learn new choreography on Sunday afternoon. YPBT produces three performances each season and offers other smaller public performances. Our major performance is held at the University of Michigan-Flint Theatre.
